Shakhtar Donetsk draws 1-1 at Celtic, keeps alive CL hopes

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Shakhtar Donetsk kept alive its hopes of advancing in the Champions League by recovering to draw 1-1 at Celtic on Tuesday as the Scottish champions were knocked out of European competition.

Giorgos Giakoumakis gave Celtic the lead in the 34th minute but a superb finish from exciting young talent Mykhailo Mudryk in the 58th earned the Ukrainian team a point and made it 10 home games without a win for Celtic in the Champions League — a run stretching back nine years.

Shakhtar slipped three points behind second-place Leipzig, a 3-2 winner over Real Madrid on Tuesday. Shakhtar plays Leipzig next week in the group closer, having already beaten the German team 4-1 away at the start of group play.

The result consigned Celtic to a last-place finish in Group F ahead of its final game against Real Madrid in Spain next week and blocked an escape route to the Europa League.

Celtic did not quite create the quality of chances it had in earlier group games but Kyogo Furuhashi missed an excellent opportunity to put the hosts back in front. However, the visitors subsequently produced a strong contender for miss of the season, with Danylo Sikan casually sidefooting wide of an open goal from six yards at the end of a counterattack.

Celtic took the lead from its first real opportunity, when Sead Haksabanovic got to the byline and drove in a low cross that saw Liel Abada’s effort blocked and Giakoumakis turning the ball home from seven yards.

The 21-year-old Mudryk equalized after Celtic lost the ball just inside Shakhtar’s half. Mudryk sprinted toward the penalty area, cut inside and made space for himself to fire into the roof of the net from 20 meters.
