TORONTO – A looked at the 2024 Canadian Championship:

TEAMS: The field features 14 teams: three from Major League Soccer, eight from the Canadian Premier League and the Ontario, Quebec and B.C. league champions.

BYES: The defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps and 2023 runner-up CF Montreal get first-round byes.

FORMAT: The six preliminary round consists of single matches with the quarterfinals and semifinals two-match affairs (home and away). The final, slated for Sept. 24 or 25, is a single game.

AT STAKE: The Voyageurs Cup and a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the confederation’s elite men’s club competition.

PEDIGREE: Toronto has won the cup eight times and finished runner-up five times.
