Fourth-tier club Kickers Offenbach knocked out second-division team Magdeburg with a 2-1 win in the German Cup on Monday.
Alexander Sorge put Offenbach ahead in the first half and although Martijn Kaars equalized for the away side early in the second period, substitute Valdrin Mustafa secured the upset with a winner from close range in the 74th.
Also Monday, Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt all progressed to the second round.
Bremen beat Energie Cottbus 3-1 thanks to a hat trick from 20-year-old Keke Topp and Wolfsburg overcame fourth-tier Koblenz 1-0.
Frankfurt dispatched second-division team Eintracht Braunschweig 4-1, with all the goals coming in the second half.
Bundesliga teams Bayern Munich, Leipzig, Borussia Mönchengladbach and last season’s finalist Kaiserslautern all overcame lower-league opposition over the weekend to progress.
Two of the 32 opening-round games remain to be played. Reigning champion Bayer Leverkusen play away at fourth-tier side Jena on Aug. 28 and Stuttgart faces second-tier Munster the day before.
Leverkusen beat Stuttgart on penalties in the German Supercup on Saturday.
