OTTAWA – Latifah Abdu and Jessica De Filippo scored as Vancouver Rise FC defeated Ottawa Rapid FC 2-0 in Desiree Scott’s regular-season home finale on Wednesday.

Scott, a longtime Canadian women’s national team midfielder who’s known as “The Destroyer,” will retire at season’s end after spending the league’s inaugural campaign with Ottawa.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe named Oct. 8 as Desiree Scott Day before kickoff, and the 2,906 fans at TD Place wore pink headbands in her honour.

“I said I wanted to keep it low key… that’s not very low key Ottawa,” the 38-year-old Scott said. “I’m so grateful for the fans, this club wanting to celebrate me. It’s been an honour to help get this league off the ground and to do it with Ottawa Rapid — I wouldn’t want to do it with any other club.

“It’s been a wonderful journey and I’m just happy that I can celebrate it with teammates, coaches, staff, and the fans who have made it happen.”

Scott’s career isn’t quite over.

Ottawa Rapid FC wraps up its regular season on the road against Halifax Tides FC on Wednesday.

The Rapids have also clinched a playoff spot and are tied for second place with Montreal and Vancouver, each with 36 points.
