VANCOUVER – There will be two World Cup components coming to an end today in Vancouver.

When Switzerland and Colombia square off this afternoon in a round of 16 game at BC Place Stadium, it will mark the seventh and final World Cup match at the multi-purpose stadium in Vancouver’s False Creek.

It will also spell the end of either Switzerland or Colombia’s bid for world soccer supremacy.

Switzerland, listed at No. 15 in FIFA’s current rankings, topped Group B with two wins and a draw, beating Canada 2-1 on June 24 in Vancouver in the process. Switzerland then beat Algeria 2-0 on July 2 in the round of 32, also in Vancouver.

Colombia, listed at No. 11 in FIFA’s current rankings, topped Group K with two wins and a draw, and edged Ghana 1-0 on Friday in a round of 32 match in Kansas City. Ghana didn’t allow a shot on goal after taking an early lead.

Both attacking sides are expected to field healthy lineups for today’s 1 p.m. PT kick off.

And netminders Gregor Kobel (Switzerland) and Camilo Vargas (Colombia) have been superb in the tournament. Switzerland scored seven goals and surrendered three in group-stage play, while Colombia scored four goals and allowed one over three group-stage matches.

Argentina and Egypt will play today’s early game in Atlanta. The winner of that match and today’s winner in Vancouver will meet in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Kansas City.
