Valour FC didn’t get its new field boss his first victory but a 1-1 draw with FC Edmonton at IG Field Saturday afternoon was the Canadian Premier League club’s first point in three games since the hiring of general manager and head coach Phillip Dos Santos.

Dos Santos, who replaced Rob Gale on Sept. 23, said he sees real progress for his club, which is now winless in seven games. Valour last posted a victory on Aug. 24 against the same Eddies.

“It’s important to see the progress on the pitch but it’s also important to see the progress that’s happening around the team and I feel that every day,” said Dos Santos. “There is growth. I look at the team and I go back to that first game we played with conceding so many chances to the opposition, so many shots and two games back-to-back.

“Today (it was) very difficult for Edmonton to play through us, through the middle. So I think that we’re doing a better job keeping things tight, things compact (and) eliminating distance between our lines.”

Moses Dyer gave the hosts a tantalizing 1-0 lead on a successful penalty in the 14th minute. Edmonton’s Easton Ongaro equalized in the 67th minute.

The Winnipeggers lost 3-1 at home to Pacific on Wednesday and are in the middle of a stretch where they have won once, with three draws and 10 losses in their last 14 games.

As a result, they have dropped out of out of a playoff spot and sit in sixth place, five points out of the fourth and final post-season berth.

Valour, 7-3-11 overall, hosts Cavalry FC Tuesday night. Seventh-place Edmonton is 4-7-10.

On Saturday, Valour played without leading scorer Austin Ricci, who will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery this week.

“What both teams did today was extremely difficult and knowing that you played 72 hours ago and you have another game coming in right away on Tuesday,” said Dos Santos. “I felt it was a game that was played at a good rate. The teams looked to win the game, looked to go at each other and I think there were moments of good quality.

“Now again, when you get up on the score, 1-0 at halftime, and you get a chance or to to to maybe kill the game and even when it was 1-1 I’m thinking about a very good chances chance for William (Akio) and you’re not able to get the lead back, it’s always disappointing.”
