Three matches remain at Investors Group Field in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but only Monday’s figure to have real meaning.
All three matches are the third game of group play for the countries involved.
Monday, Germany meets Thailand at 3 p.m. in a Group B contest, while New Zealand faces China at 6:30 p.m. in a Group A game.
All four teams have a reasonable hope to advance to the elimination round of 16, which begins next Saturday.
Champions
Tuesday at IGF, Japan, the 2011 World Cup champions, meet Ecuador at 4 p.m.
The fourth-ranked Japanese are already through to the Round of 16 based on their two wins so far.
Ecuador has dropped both matches so far and has been outscored 16-1 in doing so.
Monday’s Group B game pits the top-ranked Germans against a Thai squad that’s in the running for the Round of 16.
Germany has a win and a draw for four points and leads the group based on goal differential. Advancing is pretty much a lock.
Thailand, with a win over hapless Ivory Coast and a loss to Norway, could be well-placed for advance if it somehow could pull a result from the Germans.
The Group A game Monday night also has Round of 16 implications.
China has a win and a loss for three points, while New Zealand, coming off its scoreless draw against Canada, has just one point.
Canada, playing the Netherlands Monday in Montreal, currently leads the group with four points, but nothing is assured, meaning New Zealand could play its way into advancement.
China and New Zealand are 16th and 17th in the FIFA women’s world rankings, respectively.
All six teams gearing up for their next matches in Winnipeg will train today at Investors Group Field.
