Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 19/08/2021 (1543 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
If the hunger for Canada’s game wasn’t enough, perhaps a $1.50 hot dog and pop could satisfy hockey fans until the NHL’s pre-season.
A redditor by the username u/TheSewallSyrum is ranking each NHL arena by its proximity to a Costco.
Of course, the nostalgia of calorie-inducing arena eats really does rile up the conversation. As of Aug. 19, the thread received a whopping 3,400 upvotes.
Taking the No. 1 spot on the list is the Vancouver Canucks: Rogers Arena located 36.57 metres from the nearest Costco.
The Ottawa Senators followed at second, The Canadian Tire Centre located 2 km from the nearest Costco.
Toronto’s Maple Leafs were ranked 19 on the list: Scotiabank Arena located 12 km from the nearest Costco in Thorncliffe Park.
Redditors took to the thread, commenting not only on the detail of the list but also sharing wholesome memories of grabbing snacks before the big game.
Reddit user and Canucks fan, u/keithisonfire, commented, “Part of the ritual of going to a Canucks game is to get a hot dog before you go in.”
A fellow Canucks fan by the username, u/,SMA2343 chimed in saying, “I did that for my first ever Canucks game, and it was magical.”
Others also shared their snack of choice, from chicken bakes (only found in American Costco food courts) to the classic Costco-sized poutine in Canada.
The price of cheap eats at Costco was also compared to the inflated prices for food and drinks at NHL stadiums. Users complained of overpriced $16 beers and $20 combos compared to running to the nearby Costco food court for a meal that costs less than $10.
Despite the wildly different choices of favourite team or player, it seems the greasy satisfaction of devouring cheap fast food (and possibly sneaking leftovers) prior to a big game unites hockey fans near and far.
Correction — Aug. 19, 2021: This article was updated to correct that the closest Costco to Scotiabank Arena is in Thorncliffe Park, not Leaside.
