The Manitoba Law Foundation is providing a $4.5-million grant for three bursaries benefitting some people seeking careers in the field.

The bursaries are for students seeking to study, or already studying, law at the University of Manitoba.

One is intended to encourage more First Nations, Inuit and Métis people to join the field. Another is intended for members of the Black community or other underrepresented groups. The other is earmarked for people committed to “advancing access to justice” in northern, remote and rural areas of Manitoba.

Eligible students can apply for a bursary to cover up to full tuition costs and could benefit for up to three years, a U of M news release said.

“These funds help us work towards removing barriers that have historically made it more difficult for individuals from underrepresented communities to pursue legal education and careers,” dean of law Richard Jochelson said in the release.

“This is such an amazing opportunity for students, the law school and this province.”
