Arrest in year’s first homicide

A Winnipeg man has been charged with the first slaying of the year.

Winnipeg police said on Friday Derin Hanninen, 59, was arrested about 90 minutes after an injured man was found outside on the ground in the 800 block of Furby Street on Thursday at about 7:30 a.m.

Hanninen has been charged with second-degree murder. He has been detained in custody.

Police said the victim was 62-year-old Daniel Jawbone of Winnipeg.

Jawbone, who police say was assaulted inside the suspect’s suite in the same block, was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries.
