A 23-year-old man is facing arson and theft charges after an incident at Red River College Polytechnic’s downtown campus in February.

Police said they were told a man stole thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment from the school and set fire to the premises on Feb. 23, while staff members and students were in the building. The building was evacuated, and nobody was hurt.

Security video helped in identifying a suspect, the Winnipeg Police Service said Saturday. A subsequent fire and police investigation determined the fire was deliberately set.

Treysten Porteous was arrested Thursday. He is charged with arson with disregard for human life, arson causing damage to property and theft over $5,000. He was detained in custody.
