Autopsy confirms body found in Nelson River was missing Alberta man

A body found in the Nelson River in Manitoba’s north has been identified as an Alberta man who went missing in August while fishing, RCMP say.

Mounties from the Thompson rural detachment were alerted to 60-year-old James Redmond’s disappearance early on Aug. 3. RCMP were told he often fished from the shore of the river near his cabin.

Officers searched along the shore and found gear that belonged to him about 200 metres upstream from the Manitoba Hydro Kelsey generating station. RCMP used drones and contracted divers to search the river.

On Sept. 1, a private diving company, Dominion Divers, and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team returned to the dam to search for Redmond and found a body in the water, near the shore.

RCMP had the body transported to Winnipeg for an autopsy, which confirmed the dead man was Redmond. His death is not considered suspicious.
