Winnipeg police believe a group of boys – including a nine-year-old – are responsible for an after-hours break-in at a retail shop on Ellice Avenue and the later arson of a gazebo off Sargent Avenue early Thursday.
Patrol officers were called to the break-in of the shop on the 1000 block of Ellice Avenue at about 1 a.m. A group of youths smashed the front window, broke things inside and made off with merchandise, police said.
About 30 minutes later, police were again called about a group of teens who set a fire inside a gazebo at the rear of a property on the 1000 block of Sargent Avenue.
Officers, along with the police dog unit, later found a group of youngsters on the 500 block of Spence Street and arrested them.
Four boys, 12, 13, 14 and 14, will be charged for break and enter and arson. All were released on undertakings to an adult. The nine-year-old, who is too young to be charged criminally under Canadian law, was referred to a provincial justice program for kids under 12.
