City crews were scrambling to repair a burst water main that flooded a major Winnipeg thoroughfare Friday morning, with work expected to continue into the weekend.

The water-main break, located on Logan Avenue near McPhillips Street, snarled traffic and caused delays for some motorists. The City of Winnipeg closed an eastbound lane of Logan near Weston Street after crews arrived on scene.

“We are currently isolating the leak and expect to complete repairs sometime this weekend, provided there are no complications,” a city spokesperson said in an email statement. “The lane closure will remain in effect until further notice.”

The city said people living in the area might temporarily experience discoloured water in their homes, and warned them not to cook, clean, drink or do laundry with the tainted fluid.

The city is recommending residents check for discolouration by turning on a cold-water tap in their bathtub and allowing it to run for a few minutes. Bathtub taps do not usually have faucet screens, so they will not trap sediment, the city said.

“Do not use a hot-water tap because it could draw sediment into your hot-water tank,” the spokesperson said.

Alternatively, residents can check for discolouration by filling a glass with water. If the water is not clear, turn off the tap and wait 30 minutes before trying again. If the issue persists for more than three hours, affected people should call 311, the city said.
