The city has added four more 24-hour hydration stations to help Winnipeggers beat the heat this summer.

The bottle-fill stations are connected to fire hydrants for a continuous supply of clean drinking water.

Mayor Scott Gillingham said the initiative is part of efforts to support the city’s more vulnerable populations.

Seven water stations will be set up this summer. The locations are: 369 Furby St. (near Agape Table), the southeast corner of Maryland Street and Ellice Avenue (near the Spence Neighbourhood Association), the northeast corner of Princess Street and Henry Avenue (near Siloam Mission), the southeast corner of Roslyn Road and Osborne Street, 470 Selkirk Ave. (the Bell Tower), the southwest corner of Stella Avenue and Main Street (near Mount Carmel Clinic) and 185 Young St. (the Broadway Neighbourhood Centre).

Four of the stations are new. A fifth that was used last year has been moved to a new location.

“Extreme heat is dangerous for everyone, particularly our unsheltered population,” Coun. Brian Mayes, chairman of the city’s water and waste and committee, said in a news release. “These new hydration stations allow us to get drinking water to the residents that need it and help reduce the impacts of heat-related illnesses.”

The stations will be removed in the fall.
