The Winnipeg Police Service will upgrade its Taser electroshock weapons to the latest model, devices they expect will be more effective and capable of being deployed from greater distances.

On Tuesday, city council’s community services committee cast a final vote to approve a five-year contract for 375 Taser 10s, the newest model, which will cost about $880,000 per year.

The less-lethal weapons are used to shock and incapacitate people.

The new models carry more rounds and have a range of about 45 feet, compared to 25 feet with the current ones used by WPS.
