A city councillor has asked Winnipeg’s mayor to consider removing U.S. flags from inside or outside any city-owned facility, including community clubs.
Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt sent Mayor Scott Gillingham a letter Monday, before President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian items imported to the U.S. took effect late that night.
Wyatt cited Trump’s continued remarks that Canada should become America’s 51st state, the tariffs and how Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was treated during a recent meeting in the Oval Office as reasons for his request.
“It is with a heavy heart that I make this request, but I believe recent events have made it necessary,” Wyatt said in the letter, which he sent to news organizations Tuesday.
