City police patrolling Winnipeg’s inner city seized an air pistol and drugs late Saturday night, resulting in charges for a man and woman.
Officers conducting proactive patrols spotted the pair standing near a vehicle in a commercial parking lot on the 200 block of McGregor Street shortly before midnight on Saturday, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Sunday.
“Businesses were closed due to the time of day in an area known for higher rates of both property and violent crime,” WPS said. “When officers approached the vehicle to speak with the pair, they observed a firearm in plain view inside the vehicle.”
Officers arrested the pair and searched the vehicle, discovering a Beretta-styled air pistol, and an assortment of drugs, including approximately 20 grams of cocain, 22 grams of methamphetamine and 73 Gabapentin prescription pills, WPS said.
Police also seized a cell phone, scale and $625 in cash.
A 66-year-old man faces multiple trafficking-related, weapons-related, and proceeds of crime charges. He was released on an undertaking.
A 44-year-old woman faces similar charges, including for failing to comply with a release order. She also faces a charge of mischief to property after police said she damaged a door during the intake process at the police station.
The woman was detained in police custody awaiting further disposition.
