Cleanup and remediation at the site of the former Manwin Hotel has resumed after it was halted due to the presence of asbestos last month.

“All necessary approvals and permits were obtained by the site remediation contractor,” the city said in an email on Wednesday.

“We can confirm that debris removal and site remediation work continues. It is expected the majority of the work will be completed in the next week.”

The Manwin burned to the ground last month when an overnight fire engulfed the dilapidated hotel and forced the evacuation of about 150 people from Main Street Project’s next-door shelter.

The building was rendered a total loss, and an emergency demolition was ordered.

A day later, those efforts were halted after asbestos was found at the site, which was built in 1882.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the city said.
