A fire at the Manwin Hotel Sunday morning led to evacuated individuals seeking temporary shelter in a Winnipeg Transit bus.

The fire happened at about 7:38 a.m. Dec. 29 at the hotel in the 600 block of Main Street. It is under investigation and the building sustained water, smoke, and fire damage. No determined cause has been released and no injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews fought the blaze from inside the building and declared the fire under control within about half an hour of responding to the scene.

Firefighters searched the hotel to make sure everyone got out safely. A Winnipeg Transit bus responded to the scene to provide temporary shelter for evacuated residents, and the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services is helping 16 people find temporary housing support, a City of Winnipeg spokesperson stated.

The surrounding area is slippery because water used to fight the fire has frozen, and the city is urging drivers and pedestrians to be cautious, saying crews will be applying sand and de-icing agents to sidewalks and roadways as needed.
