A former teacher at a Fort Garry school is charged with sex crimes after starting “an inappropriate relationship” with a student, police said.
Last month, the Winnipeg Police Service’s child abuse unit began investigating an incident involving the luring of a girl in her mid-teens.
Investigators determined the man was a teacher at the school between October 2024 and March. He is no longer an employee, the WPS said in a news release Thursday.
“He inappropriately communicated with a student through private messaging on a social-media platform. The accused gained the victim’s trust and forged an inappropriate relationship with her,” the release said.
Ketan Badiani, 58, was arrested Friday and has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and luring a person under 18 by means of telecommunication.
He was released on a court order prohibiting contact with minors.
Police did not identify the school.
The Manitoba teacher’s registry states Badiani is a member in good standing whose certificate was issued on June 30, 2006.
