The Elmwood-Transcona seat held by former NDP MP Daniel Blaikie is now vacant.

Blaikie said in late February that he would step down at the end of March.

Elections Canada said a byelection must be announced between April 13 and Sept. 29. That announcement will signal the start of the byelection period.

The byelection must be held on a Monday, at least 36 days but no more than 50 days after the day the byelection is announced. The earliest date the byelection can be held is May 20.

In total, either Daniel Blaikie or his father, Bill, were in Parliament for about 38 of the past 45 years.
