Wildfire evacuees from Garden Hill and St. Theresa Point First Nations began returning home this week after being forced from their communities owing to wildfire.

Alex McDougall, interim grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, which represents four Island Lake First Nations, confirmed that about 4,000 residents from the communities began flying home Tuesday. Flights are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Garden Hill and St. Theresa Point have been evacuated twice this year owing to wildfires in separate orders issued in June and July.

About 14,000 Manitobans were still displaced as of last week.
