Two animal rights organizations are calling on law-enforcement authorities to enforce animal cruelty laws at upcoming bull-riding events.
Manitoba Animal Save and a national group, Animal Justice, say the use of flank straps, electric prods and spurs likely violate Manitoba’s Animal Care Act.
Professional Bull Riders events are scheduled in Dauphin on Friday and Brandon on Saturday.
“Animal suffering should never be a form of entertainment,” Danae Tonge of Manitoba Animal Save said in a news release Wednesday. “It’s time for Manitoba to end cruel and outdated rodeo practices that exploit and harm animals, including the use of flank straps, spurs and electric prods, once and for all. Cruelty is not a sport.”
