Heat advisory issued for northwest Manitoba

The Manitoba government is warning communities in northwest Manitoba to take precautions ahead of hot and humid conditions expected throughout the weekend.

Flin Flon, Grand Rapids, Lynn Lake, Norway House Cree Nation, The Pas, Pukatawagan and as far south as Hunter’s Point are expected to reach 29 C or higher, the province said in a news release Friday.

Overnight temperatures are not expected to drop below 16 C over the weekend.

Older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illness, people who work outside and people living alone are at heightened risk of heat-related illness and should take extra precautions, the release said.

Symptoms of heat illness can include dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, headache and/or fast breathing.

If you think someone is suffering from heat-related illness, call for help, move them to a cool place if possible, apply cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing and fan the person as much as possible.

Drinking plenty of liquids, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, planning outdoor activities during cooler times of day, limiting alcohol consumption and staying away from direct sunlight can help prevent heat-related illness.
