Police say a man “cornered” a victim during a home invasion after grabbing a butcher knife from the kitchen and stabbing himself.
A family was asleep when they heard someone break into their home on the 700 block of College Avenue shortly after midnight Friday, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
The home invader grabbed the knife and began stabbing himself after a homeowner confronted him, then turned towards the victim, the WPS said. Police arrested the man moments later.
The man arrested was taken to hospital in stable condition because of his stab wounds, police said, adding “substance use is believed to be a factor” in the incident.
The residents were not hurt.
A 26-year-old man has been charged assault with a weapon, breaking-and-entering a dwelling house with intent and two counts of breach of recognizance. He remained in custody.
