Housing starts up 24 per cent in Winnipeg this year

Hundreds more homes were built in Winnipeg at the start of this year than in 2025.

There were 1,216 housing starts in the city between January and March, a 24.3 per cent increase from the 978 built during the same period of 2025, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data.

“We’ve made it a priority to cut red tape and speed up approvals, and these numbers show our plan is working,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in a news release. “We are making it easier for builders to get shovels in the ground, and that means more homes for Winnipeg families, more quickly.”

National housing starts rose 8.6 per cent during the same period.

The increase includes a large bump in so-called “missing middle” housing, which includes medium density housing types like duplexes, fourplexes and rowhouses, while apartment construction also increased.

Winnipeg saw 4,993 housing starts throughout 2025.
