Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after an off-duty officer allegedly left a Winkler convenience store without paying for an item.
The incident happened Jan. 18. The Winkler Police Service received a report about the incident involving a man, later identified as an off-duty member of the service, at the First Street store on Jan. 22. The police service notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba about the report on Jan. 28.
Winkler police Chief Ryan Hunt said Monday the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the IIU investigates. Hunt said the off-duty officer is not currently facing any criminal charges from the Winkler police department.
Hunt gave no other details, citing the IIU investigation.
The IIU asked witnesses or anyone with information about the incident, or video that might be relevant, to call 1-844-667-6060.
