Manitoba’s police watchdog has launched an investigation after a 34-year-old man died while in police custody Wednesday morning.
Officers responded to reports of a break and enter on the 100 block of Burrin Avenue, where they found the man unconscious around 8 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release
Police said the man entered the home unlawfully while the homeowners were present.
“Officers handcuffed the male for safety reasons in order to safely provide him the first aid he required until Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel arrived. The suspect was transported to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased,” WPS said.
The release did not include any information about the man’s injuries or how he ended up unconscious.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which reviews all police incidents involving serious injury or death, is now handling the investigation.
