The Winnipeg Jets have recalled top prospect Elias Salomonsson from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Salomonsson, chosen in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, has six assists in 17 AHL games this season and is known as a strong puck moving defenceman that plays with an edge.

The Jets are in need of additional defence after Neal Pionk left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Wild with a lower-body issue.

Pionk was originally placed in the day-to-day category by Jets head coach Scott Arniel, who noted further tests were required.

Pionk’s status for the Jets five-game road trip that begins Wednesday against the Washington Capitals will be updated after Tuesday’s workout.

To make room for Salomonsson on the active roster, the Jets placed goalie Connor Hellebuyck on injured reserve.
