The Winnipeg Jets’ opening-day roster features an unexpected twist, since Jonathan Toews isn’t on it.

However, that doesn’t mean the Winnipegger and second-line centre isn’t going to be in the Jets’ lineup on Thursday for the season opener against the Dallas Stars at Canada Life Centre.

Since Toews was injured during training camp and he wasn’t an NHL player last season, he’s technically on non-roster injured reserve, but will be able to be activated once he gets medical clearance and provided he doesn’t suffer a setback this week.

Toews tweaked something (lower body) in last Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Minnesota Wild, but he was on the ice with his teammates last Sunday and was a full participant in practice in the final workout before the roster needed to be submitted to the NHL.

With Toews’ status for the opener up in the air, the Jets’ 23-man roster included forwards David Gustafsson, Parker Ford and Brad Lambert among the 14 forwards, seven defencemen and two goalies.

The players starting on regular injured reserve for the Jets include captain Adam Lowry (hip), Cole Perfetti (ankle) and defenceman Dylan Samberg (wrist).
