Police are searching for a six-year-old boy who went missing before classes started at Shamattawa’s school Wednesday.

Johnson Redhead attended the breakfast program at Kisemattawa Kiskinwahamakewikamik School until 9 a.m.

He did not arrive in class after the program ended and was reported missing to police at about 12:30 p.m., RCMP said in a news release Thursday.

“A large-scale search was immediately initiated by community members and RCMP. Searchers combed through wooded areas, trails, roads, sheds and construction equipment looking for the child,” the release said.

Searchers are looking for Johnson on foot and are also using vehicles and ATVs.

RCMP obtained video from the school to try to determine the circumstances regarding his leaving school property and which direction he went.

The RCMP search-and-rescue team, the Office of the Fire Commissioner and volunteers from Winnipeg Volunteer Search and Rescue are headed to the community, and the Canadian Rangers will also be travelling there.

The fly-in First Nation is more than 744 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Shamattawa RCMP ask anyone with information that might help searchers to call the detachment at 204-565-2351, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.
