A man has been charged with breaking into a Manitoba Hydro facility to steal copper wire.

Police were sent to the site on Henlow Bay in the West Fort Garry industrial area at  2:43 a.m. Monday and found a man collecting wire. He tried to hide, but security personnel monitoring security video gave officers real-time updates. Police seized a knife and identification belonging to another person, and found the man was wanted on warrants for failing to attend court and breaching release conditions.

A 42-year-old man is charged with break and enter, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of an identity document, breaching an undertaking and failing to attend court.

“Copper theft is extremely dangerous and has resulted in serious injuries and death in Manitoba,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.
