Man charged after fatal church fire

A Winnipeg man has been arrested for two arson-related homicides at a North End church.

Alex Donald Courchene, 28, was arrested on Wednesday following the Sept. 14 fire at House of Covenant International Church at 1410 Main St.

The fire killed Geda Wodisso, 49, and Zenabu Gula, 38, who were in one of the suites upstairs.

Courchene has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of arson disregard for human life. He has been detained in custody.

Investigators have determined that Wodisso and Gula were married and were not known to the accused.
