Man charged after pedestrians threatened with knife

At the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street on Friday, police responded to reports of a man threatening several pedestrians with a knife.

One of the pedestrians had jumped into a passing security vehicle and contacted police.

Foot Patrol officers, with support from Central District General Patrol, found a suspect at Portage and Main in possession of a knife. The suspect attempted to flee, but was taken into custody near Main Street and McDermot Avenue, police said. The knife was recovered during the arrest, and no injuries were reported.

Phillip William Riel-Labiuk, 25, has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and failing to comply with a release order. He was detained in custody.
