Police say a man randomly attacked people and damaged property in a series of incidents downtown last week.

A man began smashing vehicle windows in a parking lot on the 300 block of Broadway at about 9:40 a.m. on Oct. 1, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

After a security guard confronted him with a stick, the man stole the guard’s radio and used it to break two windows of a nearby building before fleeing, the WPS said.

The man then allegedly punched two men, ages 61 and 22, at random on Broadway. The older victim was not hurt, while the younger man suffered an upper-body injury and was taken to hospital in stable condition, the WPS said.

Shortly after, the man went to the Winnipeg Law Courts and allegedly damaged more property. Sheriffs detained the man until police arrested him.

The man allegedly assaulted one of the sheriffs, who did not require medical attention, while being held.

A 30-year-old man is charged with four counts of mischief under $5,000 and single counts of assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon, assault, mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order. He was detained in custody.

The man has a lengthy criminal record dating to 2013, including convictions for drug possession, assaults, weapons offences, break-and-enters and escaping lawful custody, and at least 10 counts of mischief.

Most recently, he pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and failing to comply with a probation order in February after incidents that happened in May 2024. He was given 292 days in custody, less time served, two years probation and a lifetime weapons ban.
