Man charged after stabbing girlfriend: police

A man faces an attempted murder charge after a woman was stabbed early Saturday in St. Vital.

Police say a 21-year-old man attacked his 21-year-old girlfriend with a knife at about 4:45 a.m. An 83-year-old woman attempted to intervene but was physically assaulted by the man, police said.

The older woman was able to call police and officers arrived at 5:02 a.m., providing first aid to the young woman, including applying chest seals and tourniquets. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she remains.

The man was arrested at the scene and faces several charges, including attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, uttering threats and assault.

His name is being withheld to protect the identity of the victims.

He remains in custody.
