A 27-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 32-year-old woman in Shamattawa First Nation, Manitoba RCMP say.

Police were called to the northern community about 750 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg shortly before midnight on Wednesday following a report of intimate partner violence. Police say the woman had gone to a safe location earlier in the day when her partner attended that location and assaulted her.

Officers found the woman unresponsive inside the home. She was taken to the local nursing station with life-threatening injuries before being flown to a Winnipeg hospital, where she died on Thursday.

Keith Miles was arrested shortly after the incident and initially charged with aggravated assault. RCMP say the charge has since been upgraded to manslaughter.

Miles remains in custody. RCMP continue to investigate.
