Homicide victim was Ukrainian refugee

A 46-year-old man who was fatally stabbed in Elmwood Wednesday was a refugee from Ukraine.

Police identified Ivan Rubanik as the man who was attacked at Talbot Avenue and Watt Street.

A co-worker started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the man’s wife and children.

“His wife Yuliia and their children came to Canada for a better life from a war-torn country. Now with the sudden passing of Ivan, we need the help of everyone, as a loss like this and at this time of year is horrific,” says the online posting.

Officers were sent to Talbot Avenue and Watt Street at about 8 a.m.

The victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later pronounced dead in hospital, police said Thursday.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody while facing charges.
