A man who stabbed a Ukrainian refugee in the neck in a shocking attack on Canada Day admitted responsibility on Monday.

Jayden Kyle Martin, 21, pleaded guilty in provincial court to aggravated assault for his role in the July 1, 2022 attack, court records show.

The victim’s friend and fellow refugee bumped into someone in a group as they passed each other outside the Canadian Museum for Human Rights around 10:40 p.m., before the victim was hit with bear spray, then stabbed by Martin.

The victim and his friend had been in Winnipeg for just a few weeks at the time of the incident.

On Monday, a provincial court judge ordered a Gladue report and a pre-sentence report be completed. A sentencing date will be set on Feb. 2.

A co-accused, Tyson Cole Bechard, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault in November. It was not immediately clear on Monday whether the charges of a male youth accused in the attack have been heard in court.
