A police officer shot a man near Sanford after he allegedly assaulted a woman and tried to light several vehicles on fire Wednesday night.
Officers were sent to a home in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald at about 9:10 p.m. and were “confronted” by a 23-year-old man armed with “an edged weapon,” RCMP said in a news release.
An officer shot the man, who was taken into custody and given medical attention by police. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre by ambulance in stable condition and later released to police. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is looking into the shooting. The police watchdog said in a news release that the man fled before RCMP arrived and emerged while officers were searching a wooded area.
The man was shot in the leg, the IIU said.
The watchdog is asking witnesses and anyone with information about the incident, or video, to call 1-844-667-6060.
