A man who died in police custody on Sunday night had “trouble breathing” while he was being arrested, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said.

The IIU sent a news release about the incident on Tuesday morning, about 22 hours after the Winnipeg Police Service announced the man’s death.

Officers were sent to the area of Broadway and Sherbrook Street at about 10:51 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a man acting erratically in traffic.

“During the male’s arrest, he began to have trouble breathing. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was on-site for an unrelated incident and immediately provided medical care,” the IIU release states.

The man was pronounced dead at Health Sciences Centre.

The IIU is asking witnesses or anyone with video of the incident to call 1-844-667-6060.
