The Manitoba government has intervened on the closure of the Golden Door Geriatric Centre and will take over management of the 78-bed personal care home in Fort Garry.

In March 2025, the owners informed the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority of the publicly funded home’s intended closure. After negotiations to to acquire the facility didn’t pan out, the province initiated an expropriation process, it said in a news release Monday.

An interim management team to be appointed by the province will work toward stabilizing the facility, supporting staff and restoring the home to its full operating capacity. Currently, the care home has 25 vacant beds.

The home stopped accepting new admissions following its closure notice.
