Métis and Michif child and family services workers returned to work Tuesday after two weeks of being on strike.

Outstanding contract negotiations will be resolved through interest arbitration, the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union announced Monday night. The union represents both Métis Child, Family and Community Services and Michif Child and Family Services.

A total of 330 members have returned to work. The two agencies have agreed to arbitration voluntarily, so the MGEU will withdraw an application it made to the Manitoba Labour Board last week.

“We believe interest arbitration is the best path for achieving wage parity for these members,” MGEU president Kyle Ross said in a news release. “These workers should get the same pay as their counterparts in the civil service, and we will continue to advocate for that outcome in arbitration.”

An arbitration hearing is scheduled for April 22. The arbitrator has committed to giving a ruling within four weeks after the hearing, the MGEU’s news release said.
