Manitoba’s police oversight agency is investigating after an RCMP officer ran over a suspect in Portage la Prairie on Wednesday night.

The Independent Investigation Unit said Mounties advised the agency that officers observed a man and a woman who “resembled suspects that were involved in an earlier criminal incident” at about 9:15 p.m.

One officer spoke to the woman while the man left on a bicycle, the IIU said.

“Believing the adult male who left the scene was under arrest and fleeing, a second officer turned on his emergency lights and ran over the adult male on St. George Avenue between Cochrane and Eighth Street West,” the IIU said in a news release Thursday.

STARS air ambulance transported the man by helicopter to Health Sciences Centre, where he was slated to undergo surgery for injuries to his leg and shoulder.

The IIU asked anyone with relevant information or video related to the incident to call its office at 1-844-667-6060.
