RCMP helped two fishers who were stranded on Lake Winnipeg after their vehicle went through the ice Sunday.
Selkirk RCMP were called at about 7:30 a.m. after the SUV went into the water.
Police said Tuesday that a 41-year-old man and 40-year-old woman from Ste. Anne were headed to their regular fishing spot when their vehicle suddenly went through the thin ice.
The ice was too thin for RCMP officers to drive to them, so Mounties drove as close as they safely could, being careful because of the thin ice and open water in some places.
When the two stranded people saw the police vehicle’s lights, they carefully walked towards it. Both people were unhurt and were driven to Selkirk.
“We want to remind everyone that with warming temperatures and uncertain ice thickness, it is not safe to be out on the ice at this time, especially not in a vehicle,” Cpl. Chris Kabernick of the Selkirk Area RCMP said in a news release.”Not only are you putting your own life in danger, but the lives of the first responders who come to assist you. Stay off the ice.”
The vehicle was recovered by a tow company.
