Manitoba Public Insurance said Friday it is continuing to crack down on illegal vehicle dealers known as “curbers.”

The Crown corporation defines curbers as people who sell more than four vehicles in a 12-month period without a dealer permit.

While dealers are required to keep records of the vehicles they buy and sell, curbers are not monitored. That can result in customers buying vehicles that have rolled-back odometers, undisclosed collision histories, cloned vehicle identification numbers or other hidden issues, MPI said.

The public insurer started contacting curbers last year to tell them what was required if selling more than four vehicles per year. After receiving the letters, two obtained permits, two stopped the sales and two were given provincial offence notices.

MPI sent 30 letters this February, and 30 more curbers have been identified to receive letters by the end of May.

Four provincial offence notices, each for more than $2,500, have been issued in connection with the February letters.
