A man is facing assault charges after he allegedly fought with police officers while naked.

Police were sent to the intersection of Broadway and Furby Street at about 5:15 a.m. Saturday. Callers had reported an “unclothed” man who appeared disoriented was trying to get into parked vehicles in the area.

Police called paramedics, who medically cleared the man. Officers drove him home, but he suddenly ran off as they approached the front door, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

Officers caught up to the still-naked man after a short foot chase, and he became combative and assaulted officers, the release said.

More officers were called, and the man was arrested, then taken to hospital in stable condition and medically sedated. One officer suffered minor injuries, the WPS said.

Police did not say where the struggle happened.

Early Sunday, officers were told the man, who remained in hospital, had suffered fractures.

A 34-year-old man is facing charges of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and  assaulting a peace officer. Police did not state what kind of weapon was allegedly used.

He remained in hospital, the WPS said.

Police notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba about the man’s injuries.
