The NDP has managed to hang on to the Elmwood—Transcona riding despite a rise in popularity of the rival Tories under Pierre Poilievre’s leadership.

Political newcomer Leila Dance managed to retain the seat by beating Colin Reynolds during Monday’s federal byelection. Reynolds, a unionized construction electrician, shunned the media during the campaign and instead posted information on his social media.

With 176 of 191 polls reporting at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Dance had 10,644 votes or 48.8 per cent of the vote compared to 9,473 votes for Reynolds or 43.4 per cent of the vote.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s numerous trips to Winnipeg to attend campaign events appeared to pay off with the win.

The seat was vacated by Daniel Blaikie earlier this year when he took a job with the Kinew government.

Conservative Lawrence Toet held the seat from 2011 to 2015.
