Police stopped 1,018 vehicles during the second week of the holiday checkstop program.

Twenty-nine people failed roadside screenings last week, while six others were charged criminally with impaired driving, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday. One person failed a screening test by testing positive for cocaine.

Officers also issued 37 traffic tickets and executed a warrant.

Drivers who fail roadside screenings are given an immediate roadside prohibition and can be subject to sanctions, including a licence suspension and vehicle seizure. In some cases, they can be charged criminally.

In total, 38 people have failed roadside screenings since the holiday checkstop program started, and 12 others were given warnings. Eight drivers have been charged with impaired driving. Officers have stopped 2,237 vehicles and given out 49 traffic tickets.

The program runs through the month of December.
